When you submit a list of domains, Bilgu sends them in small batches to our backend, which performs three independent checks for each domain:
- DNS lookup — the fastest signal. If a domain resolves to nameservers, it is almost certainly registered.
- WHOIS query — the authoritative registration record maintained by each domain registry, containing creation date, expiry, and registrar.
- RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) — the modern, structured successor to WHOIS, used for newer TLDs and faster machine-readable responses.
Results stream back as each batch completes, so you start seeing availability within seconds — even for large lists. Unlike tools that check zone files downloaded nightly, every Bilgu check is live.
Domain front-running — where a registrar registers a domain you just searched for before you can buy it — is a real risk when using registrar-owned search tools. Because registrars see every search and have a financial incentive to act on that data, your searches are never fully private there.
Bilgu is not a registrar. We have no ability or incentive to register domains you search for. Our checks go directly to public WHOIS, RDAP, and DNS servers — we do not route queries through any registrar API, and we do not store or log your domain searches.
Accuracy is very high for all widely-used TLDs because we query WHOIS and RDAP directly. A few edge cases to be aware of:
- Redemption period domains — domains that have expired but are in a registrar redemption grace period may show as available via DNS, but are not yet freely registrable. We recommend double-checking any critical domain before purchase.
- Premium domains — some registries reserve premium names at higher prices. Our checker reports availability, but registration cost may differ from standard pricing.
- Obscure ccTLDs — a small number of country-code TLDs have restricted WHOIS access. For these, we fall back to DNS-only checks, which are slightly less definitive.
