A WHOIS lookup queries the domain registration database maintained by the registry for a given TLD. It returns publicly available information about who registered a domain, when it was registered, when it expires, and which registrar manages it.
Modern registries use RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol), a structured JSON-based replacement for the older plain-text WHOIS protocol, which ICANN mandated for all accredited registrars.

The "Domain Summary" card will show the Registrar (the company where the domain is registered) and any publicly available registrant information. Note that most domains now use WHOIS privacy protection, which hides the individual owner's contact details.
- A Record: Maps the domain to an IPv4 address. This is how browsers find a website's server.
- AAAA Record: Same as A, but for IPv6 addresses.
- CNAME Record: An alias pointing one domain to another (e.g. www → root domain).
- MX Record: Directs email for the domain to the correct mail servers.
- TXT Record: Stores arbitrary text. Used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC email security, and domain ownership verification (Google, etc.).
- NS Record: Specifies which nameservers are authoritative for the domain's DNS zone.
Run a WHOIS lookup on the domain and check the Expires On date in the "Important Dates" card. Domains usually have a 30–45 day grace period after expiry, followed by a redemption period, before they are finally released back to the public for re-registration.
Most registrars include domain privacy protection (WHOIS guard) by default. Additionally, GDPR and other data protection laws require registries to redact personal information such as names, emails, and phone numbers from publicly accessible WHOIS/RDAP databases. You will always see the registrar, dates, and nameservers.
